Sir Percy Shelley?

On this day in 1817, Percy’s dad makes his only recorded Parliamentary speech. I sometimes wonder how differently Shelley’s life would have turned out had he followed his father’s wishes and accepted the seat in Parliament. Although he certainly would have hated it, I think of all the legislature he would have been able to directly influence…but then I think of ‘Defence of Poetry’, and his great effect on  the peace movement since his death, and it’s clear to see his refusal has made his impact much more lasting and revolutionary than it would have been in government .

“Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.” (Defence)
