Sad day in history:
July 8,1822: Percy Shelley drowns.
3 months later Mary writes: “First, I have no friend…Now I am alone – oh, how alone!”
The Story goes that during the funeral pyre Trelawny noticed that while Shelley’s body was being consumed by flames, his heart wasn’t burning. So he thrust his hand through the flames and grabbed the heart, then gave it to Leigh Hunt. Mary pleaded with Hunt to hand the heart over to her which, after some further pleading, he did. Mary is said to have kept Shelley’s heart wrapped in silk, and she was buried with it.
