June 9 1814: Mary Godwin – Fair, Pale and Piercing Eyes

On June 9 1814, or possibly June 8, Thomas Jefferson Hogg first saw Mary Godwin in the company of his friend Percy Bysshe Shelley. ‘A very young female,’ Hogg describes her, ‘fair and fair-haired, pale indeed, and with a piercing look, wearing a frock of tartan, an unusual dress in London at that time.’
