‘Rise Like Lions!’: England’s ‘greatest political poem’ gets spine-tingling Histories Festival reading | Mancunian Matters

 

Oh, I wish I could have been at this reading! A group of writers performed Shelley’s crazy, ballsy, just out right bad ass political poem in Manchester.

If you haven’t read ‘Masque Of Anarchy’ in full, you really should. I’ve posted the entire poem for this week’s ‘Shelley Sunday’ . It’s not only one of the most moving pieces of literature I’ve ever read, but it’s also full of the most grotesquely beautiful imagery ever written. Poe would dig this poem (and Ghandi did, too). Also, Shelley specifically names some of the most corrupt and vile British government ministers – now that’s courage.
